The Background+

WH Smith embarked on the biggest organisational and operational change in its history. The change was designed to transform their Retail Operations and staffing model to deliver ‘Breakthrough Value’ to the organisation. The partnership with Sullivan & Stanley supported the transformation, building credibility and confidence across the organisation.

Our Approach

Our team implemented an innovative ‘Modern Delivery’ programme governance framework, providing a structured approach to project management. We devised a comprehensive engagement and communications strategy, encompassing a problem statement, vision, goals, and success criteria, to ensure effective communication and alignment throughout the transformation journey.

Additionally, we provided leadership coaching and support, guiding leaders in adopting a fresh mindset and approach to transformation. Through the deployment of a robust Programme Delivery approach, we ensured the program’s success, while also assisting the communications team in delivering a transparent and consistent communications plan by offering relevant content and support.

This has been the biggest and most successful piece of transformation the company has ever achieved.

Retail Director, WH Smith

I think where S&S has delivered value for me is that they are that centre pin who make sure that all the spokes keep turning.

Group CIO, WH Smith

The Outcome

  • The largest organisation restructure to have ever taken place at WHSmith was completed smoothly on time and within budget, all delivered against the backdrop of the challenging Covid lockdown period.
  • ROI delivered in less than 1 year.
  • Exceptional Employee Experience – the highest employee engagement levels they had ever had.
  • 37% increase in ATV (Average Transaction Value) against the backdrop of double digit footfall reduction.
  • The pulse
