In the hot seat with…Tom Goodyear


Now very much part of the furniture, Tom Goodyearjoined S&S in late May 2018 as Teams Partner, to lead our Financial Services stream.

We put Tom ‘In the hot seat’ to find out a bit more about his role at S&S, what exciting projects he is working on, as well as what he gets up to in his spare time.

Tell us a bit about you and what you do here at S&S?

I am a Teams Partner, which means I’m an engagement lead and relationship manager. I focus purely on Financial Services (FS) markets – banking, retail banking, private banking, fintech, asset/investment, hedge and insurance markets etc.

I work directly with the C-Suite, really understanding what their issues are, where they are trying to get to and in response, help them build teams of top 5% of experts, to co-create solutions to solve these problems.

Since I joined S&S in 2018, we have delivered some fantastic strategic change teams and programmes within the FS sector and I’m looking to ramp this up for the rest of the year.

What is your favourite thing about working at S&S HQ?

The people. We’ve created a positive culture, an environment where we’re all in it together, helping lift each other up, sharing ideas and advice, rather than being driven by being better than the person next to you.

Now we’re in the scale-up phase of our business journey, it’s creating more opportunities for us to collaboratively work together to shape how we want the business to look and feel, which is fantastic.

Also, I love learning from our partners and going to pitches or on-site with our practitioners, it’s great to be in the thick of it.

Not many people can say they enjoy coming into work every day and/or that they like everyone they work with, so I feel lucky.

What has been your best moment to date?

That’s a tricky one as I have had some great moments already. But, if I had to pick one, it would be when I placed my first team into a business that really needed guidance and support. It was great going in and speaking with the executive team, then pulling together a co-created solution, which got signed off and delivered by the end of last year.

Do you have any grand plans for the next 90 days and beyond?

I will be hosting our first Financial Services Innovation Summit on Wednesday 6th November, which I’m excited about. This will be our stamp in the industry and we’re doing it in true S&S style with a community event. We’ll be sharing more details in the coming weeks, but if you’re interested in finding out more, get in touch and I’d be happy to meet for a chat.

For my personal development, I am looking to do a few courses to expand my knowledge and expertise as a practitioner.

Tell us about your background before joining S&S.

After studying English and journalism at University, I worked in the marketing team at a real estate firm in Dubai. As my family comes from a sales background, I started to lean more towards this way and ended up becoming a portfolio manager for clients, buying and selling commercial and residential property. I worked in property for a couple of years, before deciding to explore a different route. This is when I started my career in financial services with Harvey Nash.

Seven and a half years later, I had helped build a startup FS practice into a recognised and respected brand in the industry. I knew by this point I had hit my ceiling and wanted to continue learning. Despite having a great team, who I still have a lot of respect for, it was time for a new challenge.

Pat and I had been in contact for a few years – he had been making a lot of noise in the market, so we caught up a few times since S&S’s creation in 2016. I knew I wanted to move into pure consulting and the opportunity to work at S&S was too good to pass up, so here I am now.

I definitely jumped in with both feet as I decided to start a family, buy a house and get a new job all in one go so it’s been a crazy year.

What do you get up to in your spare time outside of work?

I have an eight-month-old, with my wife Jess and he’s taking up quite a bit of time at the moment as you can imagine.

I’m a keen sportsman, and still play cricket and golf, but have stopped playing rugby competitively.

Jess and I are very sociable people, so we’re always out with friends and family, probably enjoying cheese and wine.

We also love sightseeing and if we can tie in another of our passions – history – then we will. Although we are Londoners through and through, we love exploring the rest of England, especially visiting castles and historic remains. Any option to get out of the city and we’ll grab it with both hands!

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?

Approachable – I’ve always got time for everyone, even if I’m busy (we can vouch for this at S&S HQ). I suppose the reason I’m like this, is because my mum and dad are exactly the same, so it was how my brother and I were raised. I’ve always been very family-oriented and S&S is very much a family, so if I can help anyone here, then I will.

It’s the same with the people I work with outside of the business. I want to build good relationships with them and if I can help them personally in business, then of course I will.
